I have a problem with a friend's computer which is causing me much angst. It'll be a long story.
He had problems booting into Win98. When I looked into the machine using a clean boot floppy there was a v. large chk file (deleted now) & 1180 tmp files in c:\windows similar to FFFE00~1.tmp & ~GLC0001.tmp. Attrib = A. They wouldn't delete either as a group, or individually. Deltree c:\windows churned away, but no delete. Scanned for viruses from a recent av floppy.
None! Fdisk to delete all partitions, then re-create & format.
"Format trying to recover allocation unit 160432 ". Scandisk reports FAT mismatch & replaces #2. Also reports a damaged file or directory. Supposed to b fixed but subsequent scans report the same errors. System & HDD checked with PC-Clinic - no problems reported. Seagate HDD low-level formatted with Seagate tools & re-partitioned. Computer re-booted witha different write protected floppy. Same results from scandisk - FATs don't match. Fat 2 replaced with #1. 552542208 bytes of bad data supposedly deleted. rescan with scandisk with same results. Then finds lost clusters that were probably directories and redstores them, then starts from the beginning. And so it goes. I'm at my wits end.
    he-e-e-lp please!
