    Hello,

7 months ago I was able to save enough money to actually buy a descent computer. I have always been real good about keeping it maintained. My current equipment is a Athalon 1100, 256 megs RAM, (16 shared for video) WIN98SE, anyways lastnight my task scheduler came up as always and started to defrag at the givin time and locked up when I tried to CNTRL+ALT+DEL to end the task the screen went blankfor about 10 minutes. When I finally got it back up and booting just after the windows splash screen
I got a black screen that had this on it.

    EXCEPTION OE ERROR CODE 0004

(a whole bunch of numbers here)

CAUSEWAY ERROR #9 UNRECOVERABLE ERROR , PROGRAM TRMINATED.

the system seems to boot fine but I see it everytime it boots and I am worried that something is severly wrong as I have never seen this before at boot since last night and it wont go away.
Can anyone give me some insight as how to fix this problem or what might have caused it?

    Thanks so much,
    FireDancer

This appears when the computer is booting and no other time? Let's start by narrowing down what is starting at bootup.
Start\Run type in Msconfig and press enter. Click on Startup tab, and uncheck everything except for both Powerprof entries, Systray, Scanregw, your AV and firewall.
    Click on Win.Ini tab, click on the plus sign next to Windows, there should be two lines;
    Load=
    Run=
That is all they should say.
Boot up and find what happens.

    Hmmmm

    Hmm,

I did what you suggested it seemed to help but I am so frustrated
as now I am getting told by the cpu that my network is not complete... ARGGHHH. Could I just wipe the HDD and reinstall windows 98SE for a fresh start and go step by step and reinstall all my software? :(

    Thanks

Causeway errors seem to be usually (but not always) related to a RAM problem:

Error 09 -- Unrecoverable exception. Program terminated.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the standard General Protection Fault, or GPF, message, indicating that a nonrecoverable exception has occurred. This error may be reported in the following cases: you are using Dynamic Disks; you are trying to write an image to a network share but do not have appropriate rights to the share; there is a large amount of RAM in your system (2 GB or more).

To correct this error if you are trying to write an image to a network share, verify that you have write permissions to the share. To correct the error if you have a large amount of RAM in your system, decrease the amount of RAM in your system.

There's a rather extensive discussion of a number of people with the same problem here...with a few of them finding solutions. ;)
