    Greetings,

I had once read, but unfortunately did not keep, an article explaining how to set up Excel to color band rows of related data. I have a workbook that contains inventory and I'd like the formatting colors to alternate between two different colors when the inventory description cell changes,

In my example, suppose column A represents a clothing category and I have a variable amount of rows within a category; e.g., 5 rows for pants, 18 for shirts, 9 for socks, etc. I want Excel to automatically format all the pants rows to white, shirts to green, socks back to white and so on.

Does anyone know how to set this up?

    Thanks so much!

    Frank

To make sure I'm clear, assuming you started with something like the below picture and needed to add a row to a category, you want that new row to pick up the formatting of the other rows under the same article?

Yes, Newt, that's correct. And I really only want to alternate two colors throughout the workbook.

    Thanks for your assistance!

    Hi Frank,

Perhaps this link will be of assistance, or if this is not exactly what you're looking for, he has some links to other tips at the bottom of the article. Note his concern about performance using conditional formatting.
