I am getting this error message in the Event Viewer every two to three hours. I do what the error tells me to do and I run netstat -n. Now it brings up the information that it is supposed to but I don't know what I am looking for that would point out the offender and than how do I correct or eliminate the offender? I have three computers on my home network and they are all running fine. Only one computer gets this error message. Any help would be appreciated and is needed.

Sounds like you may have 2 machines on your network with the same name.

Gary and gary2 are quite similar. I'd be tempted to change one of them to something quite different. Reggie1 would of course be an excellent name :D

There are other NetBIOS names that could cause the problem. Perhaps a duplicate user name.

Is that all the data listed?

Yes that is all the data. My user names are Owner, Its Mine, and Gary2. I have used these three names on other computers but on the same network for over one year with no problem. However Gary2 is reporting the error and also it reports this error:
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: BROWSER
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 8009
    Date: 11/14/2004
    Time: 7:06:50 AM
    User: N/A
    Computer: GARY2
    Description:
The browser was unable to promote itself to master browser. The computer that currently believes it is the master browser is FRANK4.
    Data:
    0000: 34 00 00 00 4...

Would these be related errors? Are they anything to be concerned with. The one item that changed is that these are not password protected but out of nowhere Gary cannot connect to Gary2 unless it uses the password of owner. Is this in anyway related?

Gary and gary2 *** A duplicate name has been detected on the TCP network

I agree. Having had the same experience.

I started with Bob & Bob1 and had to change Bob1 to Nancy. Bob1 was 98SE. I also was getting the same error in Event Viewer in XP on Bob.

BUT IF you do change names you will need to do a regedit and make sure the name gets changed in all places. At least I had to in Win98 SE )

I know it is a BIG pain to do but should be well worth it in the end.

Ok if I do the name change what do I search for in the registry? Whatever name I change say it is Gary so do I search for that and remove all related entries or do I replace Gary with the new name?

Search for Gary And do the RENAME.

You may need to search more than once. I found the F3 key would skip one on occasion.
