Ethernet Adaptor

Not sure if I have a problem but just trying to get ahead of the game.

With Road Runner Cable I am presently running an external 10/100 ethernet adaptor.

I'm getting a new PC custom made for me by my son who is in the business and it has an internal ethernet card or NIC card.

I don't know what ports are on this desktop unit but what I am wondering is, if my 8-pin to USB cable from the ethernet adaptor is not long enough to reach from cable modem to PC, can I continue to use the external adaptor to get the necessary cable length or do I need to go buy a longer 8-pin to USB cable?

Sorry to be a pest but as I said I'm just trying to get a heads up before I start installation.

 

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking because if the new unit has an internal NIC, you won't be using anything USB (for networking that is).

All you need to do is run a patch cable from your cable modem to your internal NIC.

Sounds like you're currently using an external USB NIC. If you can ditch that you'd be better off as I've been told by Comcast themselves that throughput is better with a PCI NIC than an external USB NIC.

Thanks chiles4. I failed to mention that I live some distance from any electronics store so am just trying to get ahead of the game.

I'm just not sure whether or the mnew PC has any RJ45 port or not.

Probably shouldn't have posted this till I got further along and trying to anticipate problems that may not exist.
