sometimes Netscape just crashes without notice,
and windows (2000pro) comes with a message saying an error log has been created, but I can't find it!

after searching for recently modified files, there comes a "ntuser.dat.LOG ", which can not be open (Windows suggests to verify if the disk is in the drive specified, but the drive is C:...),

also, there is another one, "NTUSER.DAT ", which windows NEVER let me open it, because "it is in use by another application and can not be accessed ",

so I am fed up with these LOG and DAT files that I can not open, read, and by the way: the windows Help does not give any reference on DAT files, CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT THE HELL ARE THESE FILES AND WHERE CAN I LEARN FROM THEM?

CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW TO FIND AND READ THESE ERROR LOGS GENERATED BY NETSCAPE?

Thanks to all and for your patience (that I lack several times...).

The dat files in 2000 are your registry files and the reason that you can not open them directly is that they are in use. Specifically the NTUSER.DAT is the file that you are currently using. These are the different settings you see when you run regedit.Do not Edit the registry unless you know what you are doing. You can trash your system quickly!

That sounds like a Dr. Watson memory dump from Windows 2000. The dump will not do you any good, unless you are a programmer. I have debugged some of them in the past, and the data is pretty useless without programming. Even with some programming, some of the stuff I don't understand. The file is also very large, as it takes a snapshot of everything that is running in the system at that time.

You also need a special viewer as notepad will not interpret it correctly.

What you can do, is look in the event viewer.

To access it in 2000, right click on the my computer icon and select manage. When the management console starts, open up the event viewer. Most likely the information that would be important to a user will be in the application section.
