I have a new computer with Windows XP Pro. I have an Epson 1660 Photo scanner that I am trying to install. In my initial attempt I failed to close all programs (Screen Saver) and did not get a good install. Now I can't get a complete uninstall of the Smart Panel with Add/Remove Programs or the Installation disc. New Soft has a patch to use with SP1 but mentions nothng about SP2. I have read all the previous posted threads but I am still having problems. I have not attempted to go in and edit the Registry. Since this is a new computer what does anyone think about doing a System Restore? I don't think that I will lose anything but my email.

You won't lose your emails with System Restore. Personal files are untouched.

    Thanks Whiskeyman

I thought I had read that. I probably should have classified myself as an "Intermediate Novice ". I have written NewSoft an am waiting on a reply. I have also been writing Epson and they have been good about replying but so far have not come up with a solution. Thanks again.

You don't say, but have you tried installing the Epson programs again? That will either fix the problem (get the Epson programs working) or allow you to uninstall. I know it may not be as simple as that.

    Thanks mattman

Thanks for the reply. Yes I have tried several times. When trying to reinstall the installation program it detects an previously installed version of Smart Panel and ask for permission to remove it before continuing. I click yes and it goes through steps that indicate that it is removing it. Then when it begins the installation it agains detects a previously installed version of Smart Panel and we go through the same process again and again and again. For some reason it detects something that it thinks it is a version of Smart Panel but I guess that is is so corrupted that it cannot remove it. I have tried several times to remove the Smart Panel frome the Add/Remove Programs. I can remove all of the other Epson Files. It appears to have removed the content (there is no file size indicated) but still leaves the Smart Panel listed as an installed program. However I cannot find any Epson files or folders in my Program Files.
Thanks for reading and replying to my thread.

There are probably remnants of Smart Panel in the Registry. I would ferret these out and delete them - after backing them up of course :)

    Uninstall everything Epson and reboot.

Download RegSeeker and search for Epson & Smart Panel - two searches. Ensure that the Backup before deletion box is checked and delete all the strings found. Reboot and reload the software - exactly as Epson instructs. Epson printers are very picky as to how they are installed, their scanners may be the same.
Did you check Program Files\Common Files\Epson?

pmedic--I have an Epson scanner and if I allow it, the initial install installs several programs in addition to Smart Panel. (such as Epson Copy Utility, Epson Scan, ABBYY Fine Reader, etc.). Maybe you have to uninstall all before you try a reinstall.

Try the uninstall after you boot into SafeMode.

    Thanks To All

Thanks Welshjim and PeteC. I did check the Common Files and found nothing related to Epson. PeteC I thought I could go back to a point before I tried to install the Scanner using System Restore, am I wrong?

Boy I hate to try the Registry route but that may be the only way. I am still working with Epson but I think they are stumped to. If anyone could mess something like this up its me. The best solution may be just to get a new/different scanner, but I hate to give up. Thanks again.

    pmedic--Try Whiskeyman's System Restore idea.
I presume you have tried the suggestions I made earlier.
Unless you have a corrupt installation CD from Epson, I doubt you will have to buy a new scanner.

Thanks , I got a reply from NewSoft and they suggested to try a DelReg patch that they have especially to clean up the remenants of the Smart Panel. I am going to try that tomorrow (after creating a Restore Point). I will keep this thread current as to what happened and ect. so if anyone has my problems maybe it can be resolved quickly.

    It's Fixed

Thanks to all who read my post and a special thanks to those who replied.
The DelReg2.5 cleaned everything up. I removed all traces of the previous corrupt install. When I reinstalled with the original disc the computer could not find the necessary program to run the scanner. I went to Epson and downloaded an updated driver (epson 10609) and the computer then located the scanner and completed the install successfully. I hope this helps some one down the line.
