    When I open Communicator 4.79 email, on my Win2000 Pro, the bottom part that usually displays the news or has advertisments in it opens in a new window. What has changed to make it do this and how can I stop it from opening in a new window? The window that pops up is titled Netscape Communicator Services - Netscape. Also when I close that Netscape service window the window which has my email in it is titled Redirect Messenger Start -Inbox- Netscape folder.

    Thanks

    xyzon,

    Not sure why this has started. It started with me, and many others, for no reason. Just add this line to your PREFS.JS file in your profile:

    user_pref( "mailnews.start_page.enabled ", false);

    I did that for all my profiles and the problem is gone.

    Hi xyzon and Mike,

    I edited Mike's post, as he had a typo in the command line. 'S O.K. Mike, happens to the best of us!

    user_pref( "mailnews.start_page.enabled ", false);

    In the event anyone has used the line in their pref.js and liprefs.js file, you will need to change it to the above.

    I have seen a rash of this problem the last couple of days also, and it is because Netscape.com has updated their "look" and the old page which used to come up when you open Messenger is now redirecting to the new page.

    If you want to see the "new look" check it out here: http://home.netscape.com/

    Hi Mike
    tried your suggestion but no luck.
    I inserted the line in the file, saved it, reopened it to check it was there - OK. loaded netscape and got the redirect window covered by the unwanted screen.
    closed down
    re-looked at the prefs.js file and the line I added had disappeared
    have I missed something?

    Hi Walter,

    I would trying adding the line again, to both the prefs.js and liprefs.js files. Be certain to click on "Save" before closing Notepad.

    The line will be listed in alpha order, so could it be possible that you overlooked it?

    If Netscape was open when you edited the file, then the change would not be retained.

    Here are the detailed instructions for the edit:
    Get Rid of the Welcome to Netscape Messenger Page

    Post back if you continue to have problems.

    Thanks Ramona.
    It now works. the only difference from last time was that I picked up from your post to use notepad. what I did before was right click on the file in explorer and select edit.

    Wallter,

    That's great, and hopefully Netscape.com will soon get its act together! :rolleyes:
