I want to install "subj." on a clean disk. Win98 on C, W2k on D and progs on E. The progs on drive E, can they be used by both only install. once, or will I have to install. them twice, like this:
    E:\Win98\progs
    E:\W2k\progs
I´m aware that drive E in both systems wil be D:

This may seem a stupid ? to you, please bear with me :) I know my way around W 98, but absolute beginner on W2k.

BTW. can anybody recommend a boot-maneger?

    Tia

Some programs you will only have to install once and then add the shortcut to the other OS, but most you will have to install twice.

I use the built in boot manager from the Win2k install.

"I´m aware that drive E in both systems wil be D: "

I don't think this is right. If you make the Win2k partition NTFS 98 will not see it. So then 98 would see the third partition as D not E. BUT the Win2k partition will be able to see the 98 (FAT32) so the third partition would be seen as E by 2k.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I have both of my OS partitions formatted FAT32 so I can see them from either OS.

I run almost the same configuration. I installed Windows 98 first and Win2000 last. While running Windows 98, I installed all the programs that I wanted to use with Windows 98. While running Windows 2000, I reinstalled all the same programs again; however, I made sure they all went into the same folders as installed when running '98. There is one program I run that installs different files under each of these operating systems. It is WinFax Pro (version 8). It had to be installed into a different folder when using Windows 2000. Otherwise, it would have overwritten the files that Windows 98 needed.

Doing it this way saves a lot of disk space because nearly all programs place the same files into the Program Files folder. WinFax is the only exception I know of. And, as stated above, if you use NTFS, Windows 98 cannot see that partition.

If you do decide to use NTFS, you'll need to put the Program Files folder on the Windows 98 partition if you intend to share the Program Files folder between the two operating systems. If you don't intend to share the same Program Files folder, you can then have one on the NTFS partition for 2000 and one on the '98 partition for '98.
