after awaking my computer from standby (doesnt occur with hibernate,) my secondary drive (primary ide channel, slave drive) disappears from windows. going into my computer displays only the first drive, and all shortcuts or references to files on the other drive give an error to the effect of "file not available ". solving the problem involves powering down the computer, and then turning back on. (only occasionally will a warm reboot fix it.) any ideas?

OK. Just to fill this crushing silence-----
Do you have any services disabled or set to manual, like Plug and Play or Shell Hardware Detection?

Haha! I guess you did "mess with" them! I'd bet important money that your problem, and many more are nearly solved.
Remember that XP is services-based, and not resource-based like the 9x family. Turning off unneeded services is a good idea, but not as crucial to system performance as shutting things down in the 9x/ME family.
To avoid a lot of typing, and the inevitable minor disagreements over what services are needed, I will refer you to the Black Viper.

thank you Abraxas, but not one service in there refers to physical drives and the standy by function. i have enabled all the services i "messed with ", then tested the problem. i still lost the second drive. i then enabled every single service, then tested again but to no avail. this leads me to believe the services are not the problem, or if they are i am doing soemthing wrong. i also checked settings in the bios and there arent any i think could cause this. any ideas?

see my other post about the system tray.. these are the only two problems i have had with XP since it was purchased. MUCH better than windows 98 SE haha

What kind of drive is missing, a CD or a HD?

    Any burning software installed?

Any flash upgrades for the drive available?

Hopefully, when you tried enabling the services (Logical Disk Manager does refer to physical drives) you actually started the services after enabling them, or rebooted to start them.

And some system details as well.

If turning all the services back on didn't fix you up, it pretty much has to be hardware that doesn't like XP very much or maybe an outdated driver.

I know you said a cold-boot will always get it back for you but a warm boot may fail so you might want to check for a bios update as well.

Or maybe just not use standby.

Abraxas; a hard drive is having the problems, no burning software installed, no flash updates (its an older maxtor drive, 10gig), i right clicked them and did start to every one that was not running (logical disk manager was running and set to auto), then went into standby and resumed in order to test the drive.

Newt; its a hp pavilion 511w, 1.2ghz, 192 ram, 30 gig hd, 8 gig slave drive, 52x cdrom,.. and normally i dont use standby, i just stumbled upon this problem by accidently hitting hte poorly placed "sleep" button on my keyboard (right above esc, i hit the **** thing every 30 seconds) i now changed the button to make the "Turn Off Computer" dialog come up, so i wouldnt accidently go into standby anymore, but id still like this problem cleared up.

Well, Ryan, I'm at a dead-end, except to play the same, tired tune.
Logical Disk Manager service must be set to automatic and should be running at all times.
The same is true of the Plug and Play Service and the Remote Procedure Call Service, of which the Logical Disk Manager is a dependency.
Shell Hardware Detection Service should also be set to automatic. That is also dependent on the Remote Procedure Call Service.

Since XP is a services-based OS and not a resources-based one like the 9x/ME family, running these services automatically has much less effect on system speed and many functions of the OS depend on their being available.

Take a look at you event viewer and you will see a number of errors caused by services that are not on.

With that, I'll bow out of this thread unless something else occurs to me.

    Good luck.
