I have recently recieved this stop 9c error on a production Webserver running W2k service pack 4. The customer for this box is relatively unexperienced with servers, and has installed an email server package called Mail Enable which I am suspicious of. About a week ago this box also had a bugcheck with a stop 0a error, but unfortunately I do not have the memory dump for it. Also two days before this last error, an almost identical stop 9c error presented itself. I have been trying to make sense of the arguments along with the error, but the Intel developer manual isn't helping a lot. (I was converting the hex to binary to try and figure out exactly what the processor was doing at the time of the crash)

Here is the output of the memory dump.

I would appreciate any help I could get.

    Thanks,

    Doug Woodgate

Had to lopp off a chunk to get it to fit... Here is the info behind the bugcheck analysis

    MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION (9c)
A fatal Machine Check Exception has occurred.
    KeBugCheckEx parameters;
    x86 Processors
If the processor has ONLY MCE feature available (For example Intel
    Pentium), the parameters are:
    1 - Low 32 bits of P5_MC_TYPE MSR
    2 - Address of MCA_EXCEPTION structure
    3 - High 32 bits of P5_MC_ADDR MSR
    4 - Low 32 bits of P5_MC_ADDR MSR
If the processor also has MCA feature available (For example Intel
    Pentium Pro), the parameters are:
    1 - Bank number
    2 - Address of MCA_EXCEPTION structure
3 - High 32 bits of MCi_STATUS MSR for the MCA bank that had the error
4 - Low 32 bits of MCi_STATUS MSR for the MCA bank that had the error
    IA64 Processors
    1 - Bugcheck Type
    1 - MCA_ASSERT
    2 - MCA_GET_STATEINFO
SAL returned an error for SAL_GET_STATEINFO while processing MCA.
    3 - MCA_CLEAR_STATEINFO
SAL returned an error for SAL_CLEAR_STATEINFO while processing MCA.
    4 - MCA_FATAL
    FW reported a fatal MCA.
    5 - MCA_NONFATAL
SAL reported a recoverable MCA and we don't support currently
support recovery or SAL generated an MCA and then couldn't
    produce an error record.
    0xB - INIT_ASSERT
    0xC - INIT_GET_STATEINFO
SAL returned an error for SAL_GET_STATEINFO while processing INIT event.
    0xD - INIT_CLEAR_STATEINFO
SAL returned an error for SAL_CLEAR_STATEINFO while processing INIT event.
    0xE - INIT_FATAL
    Not used.
    2 - Address of log
    3 - Size of log
4 - Error code in the case of x_GET_STATEINFO or x_CLEAR_STATEINFO

Hi Doug. We have a couple of dump file experts. Hopefully one will be along fairly soon.

After i spent 15 minutes staring at the dump wondering what happened to the !analyze output, i scrolled down. hehehe :D

This is a hardware error, thrown by the hardware. The software was kind enough to inform you of the error, but is just a victim. The email software you reference could not have caused this error (but may be performing operations to expose it *Shrug*). Wonder if this was just a horrible fluke, caused by cosmic rays ;) . You have a Stop A and a 9c. If you get another 9c, i recommend the action below. If you get anything else, we can take a look.

This is an MCA/MCE error, cracking the parameters can be very difficult, but good for you for busting out the intel reference and trying it!

Step 1) Update your BIOS. (hardware patches called microcode updates ride here, if your proc or AMLI has an errata, it would be fixed here)
    Step 2) Call hardware vendor
Step 3) replace hardware, starting with CPU, motherboard and RAM
