Hi. Folks, As recommended by Microsoft my computer is set to automatically download SP2 and other critical downloads. I have left the computer connected to the internet (broadband) for 12 consecutive hours and nothing happened. I would appreciate some advice. Does the location where you reside have anything to do with the download being available. Regards, William.

MS is only permitting 2.5 million updates per day until Aug 25th. There are well over 100 million computers with XP as the OS. Be patient and it will come!!!

If MS wants people to download it, they should make it available on their download site.

    They have!

Do a search for "Windows XP" + "SP2" and scroll to item #12 on the second page. Currently available in english, french, german and korean!

Hello again Folks, In my search for evidence of SP2 on my computer I have found the following. (a) In 'my downloads' there is a file q812415 WXP SP2 x86 ENU (b) In 'add & remove' there are 25 Hotfix items listed with SP2 in their titles. Considering the above could anyone say whether or not SP2 has been downloaded to my computer. There are no other signs. Regards, William.

    Hello William,

Based on the above, I would say no.

I think you would have recieved a notification that SP2 was ready for downloading.

    q prefixed updates are old.

Post SP1 hotfixes are and have been labled SP2 by MS for quite some time, at least since the beginning of 2003.

Aside from the indicators from AU - anouncing SP2 ready for downloading and notification of installing, I think SP2 is too large for you not to be aware that such a large download was taking place. And, most important, if it got installed, you would difinitely know that SP2 was installed, the changes are dramatic.

    Regards - Charles

williamdp--You should get a clear message from MS that they are offering SP2 to you--either the download or the install. But in case it happened on the sly, and taking a wild guess, see if you have files named sp2.cab or wextract.exe in C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\9ded4ee34a35fced0033d3e152a36e0e or in
    C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386
However, these probably are files resulting from the installation. I am told that the actual setup files are removed once used.
That q812415 WXP SP2 x86 ENU file you mention is definitely not it. (That comes from an earlier MS patch with that number in the MSKB title.)
I got my automatic download of SP2 last night. So, as has been, said, SP2 is being doled out a few million people at a time.

Hello Jim, I have "wextract.exe" which is dated 29/8/02. When clicked on a pop up message reads "a required source cannot be located ". From what you say I would agree that MS would alert me to the download before it began. I will just have to sit back and wait. It was finding the reference to SP2 that caused some confusion for me. Many thanks for your interest. Regards, William.

It's probably gonna get even more confusing since if Microsoft continues with the pattern they've been using to name new patches & hotfixes, any released after SP2 will have SP3 in the name and there certainly is no SP3 available at this point.

williamdp--wextract.exe is a fairly common file, so if it is not in the folder I mentioned, forget about my idea. Do a search for 835935. If you do not find anything, I suspect your turn is yet to come. Assuming your PC is set to get Automatic Updates, keep the faith. ;)

I have my Home edition set to notify me before D/L or installing updates. Am I at the bottom of the list too? Would you guys recommend unistalling ZA
version 5.1.011.000 and reinstalling it after XP SP2 install? I know the default for XP is to have the OS firewall turned on. Or do you think disabling ZA would be enough? How about just disabling GoBack 3.2 Deluxe version, or does that need to be uninstalled and reinstalled?

    Hello Alicia,

    Uninstalling them, no need.

It would be a good idea to disable ZA during the install. But only if the install phase is being done off-line.That means AU set to notify when ready to install, at that point disconnect from the net. Afterwards, disable XP's firewall and reenable ZA.

Someone running GoBack can address the issue about keeping it running during the install.

    Regards - Charles

    william,

How do you have AU notification options set up?

If you ticked either of the middle two - automatically download but notify before installation or notify before download and again notify before installation - no need to quess.

If you don't want to "hunt" for SP2 download location and have access to it, then this software WUTools is an option http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=34328

    Regards - Charles

Hello Charles, I have option 1 selected because it is recommended by MS. I am under the impression that if options 2 or 3 were selected I would not be offered the download. Many thanks for your interest. Regards, William.

    Hi William,

Not true. When I enable download/install notifications, I get the SP2 notification. I have not downloaded it yet - thinking about it :)
