    Hello Members,
I am using Win98 SE with NAV2003 ,spybot S & D and sygate personal firewall
installed on my PC.From few days I found one new file viz. " idlnkaf.exe " in my 'c' drive. Whenever I go online my desktop becomes black and message window appears namely "Norton Anti Virus Auto Protect ". In that window message states that" The virus Downloader.Trojan in c:\\WINDOWS\TEMP\xxxxxx.exe was successfully removed from your computer ". Where xxxxxx is six letter/digit file name.
When I press 'c' key (there is no other way than press 'c' key) from keyboard,
this process continues eight to ten times and after that desktop comes on .
Now I can work on online. If I goes offline and immediately comesback on line, this process repeats.
Really this is annoying. Is it not? This is happening for the last one week.
I checked up with spybot and antivirus. Nowhere I found unusual.
I want to know what is this" idlnkaf.exe " file. When I wanted it to delete, it does not delete.
Can any one guide me suggesting a remedial action ?
    Thanks and regards,
    mishrarc

Scan your PC with RAV. If any files are infected, click the report button then copy and paste it here.

Download HijackThis.exe from here. Save it to a permanent folder (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT). Open and click scan, then save log. Once it is saved it will open in notepad. Select all from the edit button, copy and paste the results here. Don't fix anything with it yet!

    Hello Dave sir,
After fixing the checked entries from HJT, I have to reboot in safe mode.
For rebooting in safe mode, when I restart the computer and sooner it restarts I should keep F8 key pressed. Am I correct ? Pls tell me.
Secondly there is no Temp folder in my c:\ ,of course there is one folder named TempE14.
When I deny the access of idlnkaf.exe ,while switching on the computer it starts scanning c drive stating since windows was not shut down properly....
Pls tell me about the process of rebooting in safe mode if I am wrong.
    Regards,
    mishrarc

To reboot into safe mode, go to start>run and type msconfig, hit enter. On the General tab click the advanced button. Check the box to 'enable start menu' and OK out. Restart and choose safe mode. Before leaving safe mode, again open msconfig and uncheck the enable start menu box.

Are you sure about the spelling if the TempE14 folder? See what it's contents are please.

Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entries. Close ALL other windows and click fix.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [¢â€°¸Ã¯0 4Ã4}¤ÃÅ“5]C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe] C:\IDLNKAF.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [¢â€°¸Ã¯0+¿Ã”Çè]mú*àaîžiC:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe] C:\IDLNKAF.EXE

Download The Killbox from here: http://tools.zerosrealm.com/killbox.zip

Unzip the files to a folder, then open and double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste the following:

    C:\IDLNKAF.EXE

Don't click any of the buttons though, instead please click on the Action menu and choose "Delete on Reboot ". On the next screen, click on the File menu and choose "Add File ". The filename and path should show up in the window. If that's successful, choose the Action menu and select "Process and Reboot ". Allow reboot when prompted.

Again, look for C:\Program Files\ISTsvc and delete the folder if found.

The applog folder is a hidden folder. You will need to show hidden files and folders to see it (sorry).

Run the scans again and post the logs.

What are the contents of the TempE14 folder?

    Hello Dave Dear,
Is it not boring you.Any how thanks for your guidance .But your solution could not help me out yet. I was out station therefore I could not post you the results.
I got APPLOG file and removed all its contents. I removed c:\IDLNKAF.EXE from " C " directory. Still I could not find " ISTsvc " file even opening hidden files. Temp E14 contains all backupfiles during this process of deleting from HJT log.Below is the HJT log contents.

Hi, Dave Sir, Many many thanks for the guidance and solving the problems in a systematic way .Now I am very happy but one thing I always think that while deleting those items, our computer has created a backup folder and all the delete files are residing there. May I remove those backups or it may create another problem after deleting those files ?
Now my scandisk problem is also solved .Many many thanks again.

Good news indeed! :) I'd say give it a week, and if all is OK, delete the contents of that backup folder, then empty the recycle bin.

The entry in msconfig is what should have been removed with HijackThis. I'm assuming it is still there, and unchecked? If so, place a check next to it, check the /safeboot box and reboot to safe mode. Run HJT and fix the entry. Reboot back into Windows and it should be gone.
