    Ramona,

I am using 7.1 and would like to know how to DISABLE the Download Manager option.

I like downloading my files to a folder of MY choice. Apparently this is a new feature in 7.1. It took me several hours last night to figure out that this was not an XP option, but Netscape's.

    Thanks.

    Hi vegaspat,

    To disable the Download Manager:
    Edit | Preferences | Navigator | Download

Even with the Download Manager, you should be getting the option to save to the folder of your choice. What happens when you download a file?

    Ramona,

Well, it took me a couple of hours to figure out that the file was going somewhere in my Documents\Temp folder. ( The path was a lot longer than that.) I just about lost my mind. I chose not to install the file on the spot, but when I logged off, I could NOT find the downloaded file. I searched everywhere. I am assuming that if it was in some Temp folder, it disappeared into another world when I logged off. I ever downloaded it twice and watched very carefully where it was going. Still didn't find it.

So I logged on to Netscape 4.7 and downloaded as I used to.

That's when I decided to check with you.

I've just disabled Download Manager per your instructions.. I wish it had given me a choice. Any idea how I get it to give me a choice.

    Hi vegaspat,

If you know the file name, then do a "Find" using that file name. If you do use the Download Manager, there is a Tab "Show File Location" and that too will will give you the file information.

In the future, what you can do is create a specific folder on your HD for Downloads. You can be creative with the folder name, or simply name it "Downloads ".

You might rather use the Progress Dialog rather than disabling the Download Manager.

In Edit | Preferences | Navigator | Downloads
    Disable: Open the Download Manager
    ENable: Open a Progress Dialog

See these Screen Shots. You should see all three of these windows when you elect to download a file. This is where you select the folder location for the file.

What you might do, is open the Download Manager and remove the listed Downloads, in order to clear the file. Then, with Netscape closed, go to your *.slt folder, and delete the downloads.rdf file.

Do a "Find" for *.tmp files, and delete everything that comes up.

Keep us posted on your progress.

    Ramona,

I did do a thorough search last night for the file name. I also have a special folder for my downloads and have had such for a long time. I guess that the reason it didn't come up until last night was that I hadn't downloaded any files since upgrading to 7.1 . After your first message, I've checked "Open a Progress Dialog" , downloaded a small test file and was able to send it to my old familair folder. So, thanks to you, all is well again.

    Thanks.

    Ramona,

Well, it's back to not working again.

First question... You said to open Download Manager and remove the listed Downloads.

How do I OPEN Download Manager? When I even do Edit\Preferances\Downloads all I see on that entire screen are the three downloading 0ptions. The rest of the screen on the right is blank. On the last download I had chosen the second option which worked just great last night. Tonight it went into some temp folder that totally disappeared when I logged off. A few minutes before logging off I managed to send a shortcut to the Desktop but then when I clicked on it, nothing again.

I have deleted the downloads.rdf file, but have gotten no further.

One other thing.... This last file I tried to download had a very simple .exe extension. But when I first tried to open it right before it disappeared, a free fax service I use called E-Fax opened. In checking helpers, I can't see where .exe files are set to open with that program.

Which program ususally opens the .exe files?

I'm sure I will be having you pull your hair out soon. <G>

    Hi vegaspat,

    To open the Download Manager:
    Tools | Download Manager
    Delete all the entries

    Check your Helper Applications:
Edit | Preferences | Navigator | Helper Applications
    Remove everything (except text/html)
Let me know if there was an octet-stream listing

    Close Netscape
    Navigate to the Profile folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt

    Delete: compreg.dat (or rename)
    Delete: mimeTypes.rdf (or rename)
    Delete: downloads.rdf (or rename)

You may have to delete the compreg.dat file periodically, as other users with similar problems report that deleting the file must be repeated.

Let us know if you can download after following the above suggestions.

    Ramona,

Since I upgraded to 7.1, I've done very little experimenting. I was just thankful I could get it to function at all. So that's why I appreciate your answering all of these dumb questions. I had NO idea how easy it was to bring up the Download Manager. Thanks.

Now, I need to move slowly so as not to get too confused and to confuse you.

I CAN download files. It just turned into a problem this week.
But I had already gone through the Helper Applications and could NOT for the life of me understand why the downloaded files with the .exe extension were trying to open with my E-Fax program.

I've not deleted anything yet, but I do have the octet-stream and it says that these files are set to open with efxsetup.exe (Why?)

If I do delete everything as you said, then I will simply just have to re-set things when I do get a fax. Right?

What about all the other programs that I have set to open with various programs?

What program is needed to actually open .exe files? I checked my Windows XP settings and did not see anything there about .exe files.

I will work this part out and then move on to your other suggestions. Okay?

    Pat

    Hi vegaspas,

This is the problem! Delete the octet-stream entry. When octet-stream appears in Helper Applications, Netscape seems to list the file type as an alert to the user that something is in error. DennisL has several posts on this Netscape anomaly.

Your OS runs the executable files. Open Windows Explorer, and look in File Types - in XP you have to show all files - and look at "Application ".

Let us know if you can download, once you delete the application/octet-stream entry in Helper Applications.

Netscape programers wrote the code incorrectly.
Yes on 1st question / No on 2nd question (who's on third, sorry could not help myself!).. somehow the file name "efxsetup.exe" was duplicated to your Netscape helper assignment list. Just follow Ramona's advice, you will be fine. When a fax comes in, it will be managed the same as previous.

    PS... Ramona..
See your POST numbers "2345 ", run. God knows how many Netscape souls you've led to the light.
