Ive taking classes to prepare for installing and managing 2K3. But have a question about security. I have a registed domain name that is being used for webpage and email provided by some another company. In the future i will host the webpage and email server in house. Email will be with Exchange 2003. And problem 2K3 web for the webpages. They will have a different Public IP then the internal network. (think thats kinda obvious)

My question is when i install the new server should I name the domain domainname.com or domainname.loc ? When I implement the exchange server I could get user account for the damainname.com from the internal server and if i named it different would it have an effect on the network. I dont want the internal server to be contacted my the outside world at all. But i will have to tie it the the Exchange server for it to work properly, from what im understanding.

For the internal network i have a firewall pix, and will have a firewall for the webservers. I guess my biggest problem is ive never seen a real configured networked right.

When I talk about different public IP mean 67.XXX.XXX.197 web and email server, and 67.xxx.xxx.198 internal network to internet.

It doesn't matter that your external IP is different from your internal LAN IP. This is what NAT is for.
You can name your domain what ever you want it doesn't have to be the same as what you registered on the internet. If you decide to host your own webserver you can just point your internet domain to your external IP address then forward any packets (port 80 i would guess) to route to your hosted web server.

Can't give much detail on how to set this up as differs between hardware types etc. There is heaps of info about this sort of subject on the net...google is your friend.

I definitely recommend using a domain.local address internally.

Does your PIX have a DMZ port? If so, that's where you need to put your webserver. Avoid hosting external internet web servers on your internal network. Personally, I would not put them on my internal domain.

Mail feed coming in on 67.XXX.XXX.197:25 can be forwarded to your exchange server by the PIX.
