Let me start.....I am currently using Windows XP O/S and everything is fine.
My secondary IDE Channel Properties are both set to
    DMA If Available.
And in Current transfer mode my Plextor Writer is Multi-Word DMA Mode 2.
And my Toshiba DVD Rom in Current transfer mode is Ultra DMA Mode 2.
This stays like this as long as I don’t try to write a disc while using the net, then for some unknown reason it changes the Current transfer mode setting to PIO mode (DVD Rom) and I cant change it back unless I uninstall the DVD Rom and install another drive (old CD-Rom) which reverts Current transfer mode back to Ultra DMA Mode 2. Then I uninstall this and put the Toshiba back in and only then does it go back to Ultra DMA Mode 2.
Is there something I can do in the BIOS ?
My mother Board is ASUS A7V266.

    Hope You Can Help.

    Thanks In Advance.

Thanks Rancher for your speedy reply.
Can you tell me how to find those things out ?.
I do know that on my Primary IDE I have 2 Hard Drives. One is set as Master and the other is Slave....I think.

    I await another speedy reply.

    Cheers.

You can watch the boot startup, white text on black screen, press pause when ya see the text primary ide drive blah blah. another way is in deviceman. You must have been there to change settings of cdrom? You are not physically removing drives rite? As in open case, remove screws, etc:( ?
This prob prolly is coz your cd burner & your dvd rom is on the same ide channel & the Plaxtor slows down to pio to match the feed coming from the dvd rom, maybe:)

    ok

Well now, this is the classic wrong way to have a box setup! What make is this? Have ya had this long? Can't be very long as pretty new parts. No you can't change the settings in the bios, the bios "sees" the changes made to the hardware, jumpers & placement on ide channels. To have both hard drives on same ide channel is to slow down the ide channel to the slowest drive attached. Both cd-burner & dvd/cdrom on same channel is to interupt the progress coz only one device gets attention from cpu at a time, bummer. You may have to call the comp house to see if warranty void if you remove case to change things.:(

    friend

Is this person still a friend:D Maybe he/she can help you put it this way: Master Hard is primary ide 1 [it already is] place the dvd/cdrom as slave. Place the Plextor as master on Secondary channel & the ST340810A drive as slave. The bios will see this if "auto detect" is selected. Your WDC400BB is ATA/100=ultra dma5, or PIO5 7,200rpm 40gig. The slave is Seagate ata/100 but 5,400rpm 11ms (slow seek time):)

Yes, sorta:) You can change the cables. No it won't skeeroo everything up:eek: It will either work or,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,ah.....it....um.....er-----won't! Scarin' ya yet?
    Forward,

Facing the front of the box, remove the left side. Unplug the power cord & touch the metal frame that isn't painted, briefly. This discharge any static you may have. Now remove the flat ribbon from the western digital drive called Master & the connector at the seagate called slave. Note if this is an 80 wire ATA/100 ribbon! Compared to the "other" ide ribbon of same width, the ATA/100 will show many more little "ribs ". Now remove the connectors from the two cdroms. With good lighting you can see the small jumpers on the backs of the drives next to the white molex power plug, remove the power plug too. There will be three (3) choices. Master-cable select-slave. If the primary cable can reach to the dvd/cdrom you are in otherwise you will have to remove the drives & raise or lower them in the slots to allow for ribbon cable connections. Should we continue:)

You may find the jumper layout on the home page of your drives If you don't have the books, or they are stamped in the case of the drives showing "MS=master" "CL=cable select" "SL=slave "
On the primary I believe WD uses CL if another drive is present. In any event, try CL on the WD & CL on the dvd/cdrom attached to the 80 wire ATA/100 cable. The other secondary ide channel jump MS on the burner & SL on the seagate drive:D

Plug everything in, leave sides off til success, bootup, put check to me in mail;) ;)
