Hi All: I have had Diskeeper Lite installed for sometime now and have always questioned how my C drive gets so fragmented, all that is on it is XP and a few other rarely used programs. Most all programs and all Docs are on a D partition and all storage, pix, video etc. on separate HDDS.

Last night, just before going to bed, I defragged C & D. Left computer run all night, (DSL disabled) this morning when all I did was fire up the DSL, open my email, get message from Diskeeper Lite that C has 2013 fragemented files and 9252 excess fragments. Diskeeper analyisis of C = about 1/3 red on display.

Question is, how did C get all this fragmentation, having no programs run or files changed? To the best of my knowledge, nothing running except animated screensaver.

    - Turn off the screensaver - not really needed these days. You can turn it on again later if you want.
    - from a cmd prompt, chkdsk c: /r and answer as needed to run it at next boot then reboot.
    - run a virus scan from an online scanner like RAV
    - defrag again but using the XP defrag tool and turn off any automated monitoring/tweaking by DK Lite.

    See how things hold up.

Hey Newt: Thanks for the reply, the only way I know of to run XP's native defrag is to uninstall Diskeeper Lite. Kind of got the impression from bbs that Diskeeper Lite was better? than the native defrag tool. Mistaken impression? Lite has no ability to run in background or by schedule, you have to run it manually or pay for the full version. I have been considering uninstalling it anyhow. What's your opinion?
