    Pent 100 Hard Drive

I am hoping this is the right place to obtain some information.
So I will start from the beginning. I have an old Pent 100 and I was cleaning it up for my grand Children to play with when I Dropped the Hard Drive (1.6Gb), You Guessed it Drive no Longer works. I have come accross a 2.6Gb and partitioned it into 2x1.25Gb. when I loaded win98 every thing was going ok until it tried to reboot and the following error appeared.
    Disk I/O Error
    Replace Disk & Press enter.
can anyone tell me what the problem is
    Thanks
    Terrytb

Hi Terrytb - Welcome to the Board :)

Sure someone will be able to help you, but I have edited your thread to be more descriptive of your problem and, hopefully, gain more attention.

    Hi and welcome,

I have only had this problem once. It was when I was setting up a system with new drives. The drive (ribbon) cables would not work on that system and was fixed when I replaced them.

A web search seems to point mainly to the floppy drive. I/O stands for input/output, so it may not be able to access data on the floppy drive.

    First reseat all the cables.

Check there is no disk in the floppy drive (the disk may be corrupt, be careful of magnetic s*crewdrivers around floppies). Try booting with a Startup disk.

You could change the boot sequence in the BIOS setup to boot from the harddrive (HDD 0) first, that would confirm it was a problem with the floppy drive.

If you removed the floppy cable from the drive make sure that the red side matches pin 1 on the motherboard and connection of the drive. The "twist" in the cable goes at the drive end.

Check the settings of the drives in the BIOS. eg: the floppy is set for 1.44mb disks and the harddrive is being read as the right size.

Try different cables and/or floppy drive from another machine.

    Hope these help.
    Matt

Thanks every body for your input, Found the problem By Partitioning the drive to have half the total disk size I inadvertantly made partition 1 active and partition 2 Extended. which is the same as making it active.
Have now deleted the 2 partitions and only set up one partition of 2 Gb and everything work out Ok.
So Again I thank everybody for their input.

    Regards

    Terry Burns

The best to you all for the Festive Season
