Anyone know what this does exactly?
Does it delete old files or just compress and pack them away somewhere?

    thanks,

The simple answer is to run DiskCleanup to the point where you are presented with a list of files, click on each type and read the description in the lower pane.

Files you check will be deleted with the exception of 'Compress Old Files' - this option is not recommended - compression is minimal and the clean up process will take significantly longer.
