    Hi,
We are having a weird problem with Direct CD Formatted disks.
We are using two Direct Cd Formatted disks to save miscellaneous files and they were identical copies; but now one has less files on it than the other.
If we copy the disk with the most files on it to our hard drive, then delete the files on the CD with the smaller amount of files and then copy the files back to it from our hard drive, all the files appear for a short time and then about half of them disappear.
If we try to copy a file that is now missing from the CD, we get the dialog box asking if we want to overwrite the file. So, apparently it’s on the CD but it is somehow hidden.
Has anyone had this problem and, if so, how did you correct it?

    Thanks

Have you tried replacing the problem CD with a new one?

    Hi Newt,
    Thanks for the reply.
Yes, we tried other disks & had the same problem.
Another thing happened this morning. We saved two web sites to our Favorites list and when we looked for them now, we couldn't find them.
We then re-entered the web address, went to site and tried to save it in our Favorites list again but it noted that we already had the site listed and do we want to overwrite it.

    Something strange is going on.
We are using Norton AntiVirus with regular scannings and definition updates so we don't believe it's a virus causing the problem.

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

I've had many problems using formatted CD's and the UDF file format and abandoned it a long time ago.

I am not familiar with DirectCD, but in Nero (not InCD) there is the facility to erase a rewritable CD. The method I now use is to burn files to a CD-RW in Nero and erase the disk as and when required and start again (I am backing up the same set of data files each time so this is straightforward).

You could try this method if the facility exists in your DirectCD or associated burning program (EasyCD??).

As far as your Favourites problem is concerned my first guess would be that the site was saved in another sub folder or the master folder - and not where you thought it was saved.

    Hi Newt & Pete,
Here is an update on my problem.
We ran "Error Checking ", "System File Checker ", "Norton Win Doctor" & Repaired IE 6 & one or more of these fixed the problem with "Favorites ".

With the Direct CD problem, we originally had 123 files on each CD. When we started having problems, we ended up with 61 files on one CD and 31 files on the other.
We copied the files from the CD with 61 files on it to our hard drive. We then highlighted these files on the hard drive by "Select All" and then sent them to our CD-RW drive. When we went to thedisk on our CD-RW drive, it showed the 123 files for a short bit, then some of the files disappeared and we again ended up with 61.

We finally found a program called "Isobuster" at "www.smart-projects.net/isobuster" and using this program we were able to recover all 123 files from the Direct CD.

    Thanks guys for your suggestions.

Glad to hear that you fixed the Favourites problem.

Would still suggest that you dump the UDF packet writing software if you can and use an alternative method of backing up - possibly that which I suggested if the facility exists in your burning software.
