Is there an upper limit to the number of files in a Directory? In
a Tree? Does this differ by version of Windows? (I recall that
early DOS versions had definite upper limits for these.)

Win HELP does not seem to have such info.

    thnx

Fat 16 (win95a and earlier) is limited to 512 (equivalent) files in the root directory. see Fat16

The sub-directories of the root have no such limit.

Fat 32, HPFS and NTFS have no such limits that I am aware of other than when you fill the drive full.

    Fat32 and later
