Hmm, after saying I'm never had a problem with win2k, today I'm getting a problem with my dsl modem and some mystery hardware...

After being online for most of the day, I disconnected to go and have lunch, when I came back to reconnect my modem wouldn't have none of it, it just hung on the "Dialling..." box. I contacted BT (the modem is a BT Voyager 100) and they have said there is no network problems so the fault must be with the way I have it connected or with the software. My connection hasn't changed over the past 6 or 7 months so I uninstalled and reinstalled the software which, when I tried to connect to the net again worked first time.

However, when I restarted my machine I'm getting a New Hardware Found message, which tries to install an 'AXV CD/DVD-ROM SCSI CdRom Device' connected via a 'XMASSCSI SCSI Controller' under 'SCSI + RAID Controllers' in the device manager

I don't have a CD/DVD rom and my standard CD and CDRW are both working fine. I've added no other software and no other hardware, and I never had this problem when I previously installed the BT Voyager software.

After it installs this new hardware it asks me to restart my machine, but when I do I cannot connect to the net and have to remove/uninstall the hardware via the device manager, then restart again (which goes through the 'New Hardware Found' wizard again) before I can connect to the net :(

I have the latest updated of ZoneAlarm and AVG and no viruses have been found on my system, so any help would be appreciated :)

ok, it seems to problem may have been caused by a virus of some kind...

I reformatted my drive and reinstalled Win2k Pro with SP4, and my connection worked first time.

However, ZoneAlarmPro will not lt me access any sites or send/receive any mail. Closing ZAP allows instant access. All of ZAP's settings are default, so I have no idea what is wrong.

As soon as I closed ZAP and accessed a site, AVG popped up with a virus warning for worm/Nachi.B. It did manage to clear this virus, but obviously I'm left rather exposed without my firewall.

I checked to see what other security updates win2k needs, but it was all a little beyond me  I did download and install two patches (KB823980 & KB833330), but are there any other patches I will need?

Also, can anyone recommend a different firewall to use in the meantime? The last thing I need is to have to reformat my drive again :(

    Thankies :)

Sygate offers their Personal Firewall Standard as a free item and it is good. Not all the bells & whistles of the Pro version but good protection.

The list of patches you need depends to a large extent on exactly what you are running on your 2K machine. I'd suggest loading BigFix and letting it tell you what you need for your particular system.
