I just got my last question answered immediately so I would like to see if anyone can help here.

Not sure when this happened but I have used TweakUI to modify desktop items to not show the corner arrow denoting a shortcut. I have tried no arrow, light arrow, refresh icons and deleting shelliconcache. Still cannot get rid of the arrow. This must have happened when I updated some program like IE 6.0, as it is doing this on all my computers!

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Rob Frais

Hi Rob. Do a search on this BBS for "shortcut arrows ". There's lots of info about why, when, where and how to restore etc. May not be worth the effort tho'.

Thanks again to everyone - I did review the previous thread and eventually followed Mosaic1's suggestions and modified the registry key under HKEY-CLASSES-ROOT. This did the trick.

I did also try FreshDevices FreshUI and this also did the trick, but I couldn't see anything else that this program did for me, that TweakUI does not (not being a power user) and am not sure what it did to get rid of the shortcut arrows! (Used FreshUI on one computer and the registry change on another).

    Thanks to all,

    Rob

"Shortcut arrow fix disabled in TweakUI "?

    Not on my TweakUI!

    Try downloading the latest version.

davott--The fix is still there, but it won't work without undoing the MS Fix (can't even remember what it was for) that coincidentally messed up TweakUI. Maybe you did not install that MS patch.

Cyrus_the_Virus --The piffile fix was one of the first suggested and seemed to work, but then it was found it caused other problems. Can't remember anymore what they were. But Mosaic's fix is the one that works on the arrows and doesn't mess with the MS Patch or other programs.

That just means that you don't have this security fix installed...

That patch is not intended for Windows XP. Which is why I don't have it, don't want it, and my TweakUI just works fine.

    Thanks anyway.

Just out of interest tweakui's inf file has:
    Code:
; repair a commonly-damaged part of the registry while we're here
    HKCR,lnkfile,IsShortcut
    HKCR,piffile,IsShortcut
Which version of Tweakui to use depends upon which OS you have. For 98SE users the safest is the one that came with the Resource Kit. It is one of those apps we shouldn't be in a hurry to upgrade.

gammaepsilon--Interesting info. But as mentioned that won't work if you installed the 2002 MS fix.
P.S. No relation to deltarho, by any chance?

Well, that explains, but since we're in the Win98 forum here.... The patch is the reason TweakUI don't work, not the TweakUI version....
