I've recently been told I need to defrag after I totally reformat and do a fresh install of xp pro and other software. Is this necessary, and why?

ShannonH - Welcome to the Board :)

It would be advisable and would certainly do no harm. There is no guarantee that all the files installed are contiguous and software installations, Windows included make use of temporary files which are deleted on completing the install - leaving 'gaps' in the disk structure. Defragging will remove these, but in all honesty I doubt you would notice the difference performancewise.

I've done everything I know to do at this point

Thanks Pete. I work for an old schooler who swears its an absolutely necessary step. I knew it would help but didn't think it was absolutely necessary. I did it 3 days ago and the user has seen very little if any improvement. His pc still freezes up on him randomly regardless of what applications he is using. Any advice at this point. He's running a Dell 260 gx with 1 gig ram and a 1.8 ghz p4. I've done everything I know to do at this point.

Please start a new thread on the freezing problem and summarise what you have done to date - then we won't be advising you to do what you have already done :)

Not sure what PeteC or others would think to this but I have installed a screensaver called JKdefrag (clicky). seems to be a great little program, and has some interesting / useful features!

If it works for you that's fine :) - I have no knowledge of it and use DiskeeperPro on my computers.
