    In a PM Jim responded,

    Defrag
It will defrag for a few minutes -- up to about 2%
and then restart. I left it on for several hours
and it only got to 2%.
    I'm hoping. Thanks.

    Jim:

Restarting is the most common issue with scandisk and defrags. It is caused by something running in the background that is writing to disk.
Options are to track down the culprit, which will need some investigation, or to circumvent it.

In the latter case, restart to Safe mode, disable your screensaver and run defrag from there.

In the first case, you need to go through your individual startup programs (Msconfig > Startup tab) until you find it.

This site will help you identify the unnecessary programs that can start at boot time. Eliminating them will most likely eliminate the restarts.

If not, possibilities are an active virus or spyware.

Try the 2 items above, and let us know what happens.

I think you'll find it's your Anti-Virus software running in the background - at least that was my problem a while back. Just dis-able it while you de-drag

    is fine.
    Thanks gang.

Re defragging: I've given up on Windows' defrag. I found "Diskeeper Lite ", a free version of Diskeeper, that is an excellent defragger. Works every time, & regardless of what other app's are running or whether or not my anti-virus app is enabled. A fine program!
