    Start\Programs\Accessories\Entertainment\Media Player.
Then toolbar at View\Options, then Formats, then Select All, then OK.
You need to explore your system.

I have tried all of that. I have been through all the tabs, toolbars, and helps before. There is nothing that says format on it.

The formats tab Markp62 was referring to is under the tools>options in media player. Select all and apply, then OK. If that doesn't work then open My Computer click on view>folder options>file types. Highlight audio cd in the list. What program does it show to open with? If other than media player click edit, then highlight play in the actions pane and click edit. Now browse to program files>windows media player>wmplayer.exe .......highlight and click open. Click OK and close.

I looked through the tabs again and did not find a format tab. The tabs read: Media Library, Plug-ins, Privacy, Security, Network, File Types, Player, Copy Music, Devices, and Performance. Part of the problem may be that I have wmp9. I followed your directions through "my computer" step-by-step. It says that the default player is wmp, but when I put a cd in another cd player pops up. It is the cd player from my soundblaster system. If I have wmp up already it will play a cd that put in, but the other cd player keeps popping up whenever I put a new cd in it and trying to take over. Now I just have to figure out how to get rid of that cd player without messing up my sound.

Well, if I remember correctly, on MP9 you want to select file types. Make sure you select to play all audio types (namely.cda). But I'm pretty sure you hit it on the head with part of the problem being that you're using MP9. I dont think that version is compatible with Windows98. I just redownloaded MP a couple of weeks ago and I believe it said version 7.1 is the one you want. The formats tab is present in this version and selecting all file types will result in changing MP back to being the default player. And I'm not familiar with the soundblaster player, but is there maybe a place to check or uncheck autoplayCD in its options/tools/properties (whatever it has)?

You want to get rid of it and I wish I had it back. It disapeared when I went to onboard Audio and took the SB card out.

Check to see if that player is loading at startup ?

Look down in the taskbar to see if it shows there.

It took up much less of the screen when it opened.

Opened faster and looked much more like a CD player.

And they both used the same SB Audio System anyway.

I just use FlexiCD, one of old Win95 power toys. Works real well with 98 and just sits in the Systray, and uses very little resources and processor time compared to any version of WMP. A simple right click brings up the menu.
Concerning WMP9 and 98, a quote from this page:

Somebody should ask those Techs WHY ???? . And also ask which version of 98 they are refering to. Just saying win98 is both not enough or fair.

There are ( at the least ) three versions of Win98.

Win98 original works well . 98 Original+ SP1 works better. Win98 SE ( the best of all ) works VERY well.

I have WMP 9 on two 98SE machines and it works just fine.

And also what they may not be telling you is that Audio drivers and/or Directx may be involved. I have not had the problem with the newer Directx. But with the older ones ( mostly in 98FE ) I had to re-install Audio drivers after updating Directx in order for the Audio AND WMP to work properly.

Video drivers may even play a part in how well WMP works.

Thank you everyone for your help. And they said that computers would make life easier. If I need a lower version where would I go to download it? That's why I got version 9. That was the one I found. If I got XP then it would work fine? I'm planning on getting a new computer next month that has XP. (Mine's an antique.) I think the best way for now is to download a lower version. How would I delete the version 9? The only thing in the software uninstall is version 9 update. Is that what I need to delete?

You can get version 7.1 here . Others might do it differently, but I would remove it from the add/remove programs list in control panel, then check for and delete anything and everything left in the windows media player folder. Also delete any other references you find left behind, i.e. start menu item, shortcuts. If you have a registry cleaner, it probably wouldn't hurt to run it after the uninstall too.

That is not necessarily 100% true.

WMP9 Works just FINE AND DANDY in 98SE.

As I mentioned in my other reply. There can be other things involved.

Windows Media Player relies HEAVILY on Audio and Video. And if either one is not up to par then neither will WMP.

And that goes for XP also. Untill I got the WHQL Video drivers from the Windows updates WMP 9 did not work worth a dam.

And many times if other Video or Audio players ( which brightspotm has done are install it can mess up WMP. But that IS NOT WMPS fault.

Just for the giggles of it I just installed WMP9 on the third 98SE machine with a Cyric 150mhz, ( speaking of antique ) 64 meg of ram and Lord knows what for a video card and drivers for same and it apperas to be working just fine. ( using MSNBC,com as a test ) A little slow but that is not a WMP problem.

The Video and Audio are a bit out of sync but again that is not a WMP problem.

A mistake that can cause problems for WMP is that users DO NOT restart the machine after installing WMP. The one I just put it on did not say to do that. Bit did it anyway to allow the restart to finish the install PROPERLY.

And if WMP does not work on some sites there may be other PLUGINS that are missing.

I've got you beat. My computer only has 48 meg of RAM. I think I need to uninstall 9 and install a lower version. Thank you everyone for answering my questions.
