This spam is forever popping up on only one of my machines, this computer has NIS 2005 installed and behine a Symantec firewall unit and only downloads data from a remote factory of that factorys plant operations (plastic products). is there a way of removing it? the computer is P4/3.2, DDR ram 1gig, 2x 120gig HDD as raid 1 pair.
I have tried Ad-aware it gets rid of it but only once not permanantly.
I have also tried a couple of other programmes they also remove it once but retart the computer and it's back.
Has anyone got any thoughts on it?

    HijackThis

The current version is 1.99.1 (released 2/16/2005) [by merijn bellekom]

Most of what it lists will be harmless, even essential,
    DON'T fix anything yet please.

First make a new folder, for instance C:\Antispyware
    http://www.merijn.org/files/HijackThis.exe
    http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip
    Alternat download's > http://radiosplace.com/
    http://www.net-integration.net/tools/hijackthis.html

Choose save, NOT OPEN Save it to that new folder, double-click HijackThis.exe, Hit None of the above, just start the program > hit "Scan ". When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.

Press that, Once saved it will open in notepad., click edit, select all, then edit copy. Close notepad and Hijackthis for now.

    Hello Bob,

See if you have XP's Messenger service enabled - sounds like this the way you're getting the spam.

Start > run > type services.msc > ok. The services page will come up. Scroll down to Messenger and double click on the line. A dialog box will come up.

The description: Transmits net send and Alerter service messages between clients and servers. This service is not related to Windows Messenger. If this service is stopped, Alerter messages will not be transmitted. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

This service has nothing else depending on it - so safe to disable for anyone not using the specific service.

On the drop down menu at the Sartup type: click disabled.

You should still post a log per Tony, this may or may not be the problem.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi All,
I have found the problem, while going through Hijack This noticed that VET anti-virus software is on this machine, the only person with that is our son, well he's the wifes son now. He needed a biger hard drive so swapped with MY machine we use at work, he told no one and left me with his junk stuff, no wonder it took ages to clean this drive.
    Anyone like a son???? (FREE)

So have put padlock of the case and a alarm switch from the case to our intruder alarm system, which he can not turn off.

Now I have calmed down, thanks guys and girl for all the help.
    Bob.

Fatherhood and Saint Job have a lot in common.

I'm puzzled here because this AFAIK is not supposed work, XP should have indicated in some form that it was in a different environment, unless your system almost exactly matched his. And WPA http://aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.php would rear it's head sooner or later. Having never run into this situation, switching an OS drive the way you describe, don't know exactly what would happen.

    Hi Charles,

Yes all my computers are exactly the same, the only difference between the sons and the others is the anti-virus programme. All have XP Pro and Office 2003 licenced for 25 computers so they are on all of them both at the factory and here. WPA is not a problem for us here but it may of been for the son, don't know was to angry at the time to ask him.
We also use the same UPS's at both locations and at my home.

I did installation that way on purpose so someone coming from the factory to home base was not confused by different desk tops or locations of files etc: or OS. the other benifit if you described somthing to someone then it was in the same place on every company computer and swapping computers at a failure also is easy.

Some of the staff have been telling me for a fair time now to get a server maybe now's the time.

    Bob.
