Can I replace existing DDR ram chips with DDR2 ram? What is the main difference?

DDR has 184 pins and runs at 2.5 V. DDR2 has 240 pins and runs at 1.8 V. You would need a motherboard that is DDR2 compatible.

DDR2 also processes at higher speeds than DDR.
