Can anyone tell me how to take the email messages that were saved to a CD when I bought a new computer? They are all save as dbx. I can't figure out a way to put them into my Outlook Express. Help!

    Thanks in advancem,
    Ginny

Ginny, I do it all the time by merely copying all the .dbx files directly into OE where the new ones are. Now granted, that will overwrite any that are in there. If that's a problem, then you can also do it by "Importing" them using the tools OE provides on the toolbar. Just select Import and point it at wherever you have the backups. If you're not sure where the messages are currently being stored, do this:

Open OE, go to TOOLS > OPTIONS > MAINTENANCE > STORE FOLDER > and it will show you the location and also allow you to move it if you want. I put mine in C:\mymail just to make it easier!

There are some neat free programs that make all this much easier but here's the old drill:

    To Restore your Messages:
Open Outlook Express, File - Import - Messages . Select Microsoft Outlook Express 5. Click Next.
Then select "import from a OE5 Store Directory ". Click OK, then browse to the folder you created earlier, click next, the rest is up to you which folders you wish to import. Do be careful because the program will merge all the messages into the existing folder and you could end up with a mix you don't want. You may want to move your existing messages to a separate folder that you can create in OE.

If the official "Import" procedure does not work, you may want to try the following clunky, manual method

"There is a manual way of restoring those exported/saved .dbx files:
    A)
    1) In the left panel of Outlook Express create a new Folder. (Click on Inbox or whatever is in the far left of the OE toolbar, right click on Local Folder, click on New Folder, and follow instructions. Call the New folder New.
    2) Go to whereever your old OE .dbx folders were normally stored. Mine are in C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook Express. If you have not already done so, put the saved .dbx files in there. You should also see your New.dbx folder (the one you just created in Step 1). Delete the New.dbx folder!! Change the name of one of your real (saved) .dbx folders (like Inbox.dbx) to New.dbx. Open the left pane of OE up again. Change the name of the New folder (which should still be in the Local Folders list ) to Inbox (in this case). You should have just imported your saved Inbox.dbx.
    3) Repeat the above steps for the other .dbx folders (Outbox. Deleted Items, etc.)
    B) Alternatively, open OE and create New Folder. Name it whatever it should be (Inbox,etc.). Click on the new, empty folder and close OE. Go back to C:\Windows\etc\OE. Copy/put the old, saved .dbx folder into the C:\Windows\etc\OE folder. Windows should ask if you wish to replace the folder. Click Yes. Reboot OE. "
