I had been informed (from an unreliable source) that it is possible to copy CD's and DVD's or even burn an ISO in Vista, but I cannot find it anywhere.

I do have Roxio 9, but I did not want to use it on my Vista build as it is very bloated and I am happy with the built in burning tools of Vista also I did not want to alter them as this sometimes happens with 3rd party packet software!

I had already looked at the help files and the various formats off "Live" and "Mastered" this will indeed burn files or folders to a CD but what I was looking for was a CD Copy application as I have 2 writeable drives and I used to put one each drive and using roxio disk copier I could simply copy from 1 CD drive to the other. This would give me an exact copy.

If you wanted for example to make a backup copy of your Office 2003 CD using the burn CD option in Vista it would mean highlighting all of the files from the master disc and dragging them to the blank CD, it then copies them to a temp location and only then can you press "Burn to CD ", this will not give you a disk that will run any setup.exe as it is a data disk and not a disk copy.

As for creating an ISO (image file) it is not possible as quoted from help file

"An ISO image is a file that contains all the information necessary to duplicate the contents of a disc. You can't create a disc from an ISO image using Windows, but there are disc burning programs available with this ability. "

It looks like 3rd party software is required, but not sure which one to go for?

    Hi Steve,

Put the disc you want to copy into, say, drive A-
    >computer> right click on drive A-
    >Select 'Copy to drive B', and follow the instructions.

If drive A is set to autoplay, just right click on the CD image which appears, and do the same procedure.

I prefer to use a burning program, but have on occasion used the Vista facility. I suppose there is the possibility of different configurations but, on my computer, a simple drag and drop from one cd player to another did the trick.

Vista can burn CD's and DVD's from within Windows Explorer - but I find it to be a bit "clunky" and prefer other burning programs myself.

If it works for you, Alex Feinman's free ISO Recorder Power Toy (v3) is a good tool - but it only works on some systems for me. http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/Vista.htm

    Hi,
I saw this train going by and decieded to jump on it for the ride and add a little experience I had last night but it was with Windows Xp...I had to have numerous emails sent to a friends computer and then figure out how I was gonna copy it to a folder so I can copy all of them to a CD and or DVD...To make a long story short, I could not burn them to either but instead when given the choices I had to copy them as "Data" not "Burn them" to a CD (which solved the problem) but it was not till after trying the other options did I finally figure that out...I know this might be a little out of the area in which you are posting about but maybe the option of data is what I wanted to bring to your attention...
