XP gives the choice of "classic" or "XP" for the screen appearance in Control Panel/Display/Appearance. My trouble is that when I elect "XP ", the machine goes off into calculation land and never returns. Only recourse is to power down. Any one have any idea as to what could be the problem. I know the option worked at one time, but I don't know when/how it quit working.

If I use scannow, will it replace all files that may have been updated by Windows updates including SP2?

Not to worry, SFC is smart enough to do the right thing. It knows all about SP2 and where to get the latest versions.

I'd recommend that you do a Repair Install. That will replace any missing or corrupt Windows files that SFC doesn't have control over. It will retain your personal data and settings as well.

Either of the links below will direct you in doing a Repair Install - choose which one suits your taste:

    http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxphome/installxpcdrepair/

    http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

    Post back if any ??
Please note that a Repair Install from the Original install XP CD will remove SP1/SP2 and service packs will need to be reapplied. I'd recommend checking your video drivers very carefully, update if needed, to eliminate that before going forward with the Repair.

Just out of curiosity... what processor does your computer have? How much RAM are you using? Also, what video card?
These items may have some bearing (or maybe not).
