    Hi
I'm on dial-up and when I bought this PC about a month ago I was connecting at 46.6 Kbs. It dropped down quit low for a day or two and now it connects at 45.2 Kbs. and has been there for a few weeks.
Does this have to do with my modem? or is it my ISP?
I have dowloaded the lastest drivers not long ago, could this be slowing it down?
With dial-up I could use all the speed I can get. :D
    Thanks
    Geri

Much more likely to be an issue with the Telco lines than at your end or your ISPs.

Check your connection to the phone socket. there may be a bit of noise generated in the plug contacts. Unplug and plug back in the socket a few times in case of a "noisy" connection, and do the same to the connection on the back of your modem. If you are connected via a phone socket double adapter, this can introduce a little bit on noise, as will other connected phone devices, or if the connection is not the first phone split on the incoming phone line.

The updated driver shouldn't have caused any issues, but if you haven't checked any of the modem properties settings, the new driver install may have setup both software and hardware compression. You don't want both. (software I think is preferred? I'm on a WAN at work at the mo. so can't check for you) Although this will affect throughput more than connect speed.

I would phone your ISP technical support and explain you have updated your modem driver, and want to check their prefered modem properties settings such as hardware/software compression and error correction. As well as checking these settings in the modem properties from within the control panel, you will also need to check these settings from within your browser connection settings. In IE it's through the tools/Internet options tab. Remenber to adjust both these in the modem AND though your browser as they can overwrite each other if not working together.

    Increase the gain ?

Here in the UK we can ask British Telecom to turn up the gain on a line which may help with a slow connection, does your telephone provider offer something similar ? it may be worth a check.
