my computer has broadband connection. I want to connect Liam computer (50 feet away) so he can access his Internet games. I have read Help on Networking but there seems to be various alternatives. I would appreciate advice as to the most practical one. This would include Liam having limited access to my files. I was not able to find what cable I should use. Is there only one computer to computer cable?

    Simple.
    You have 2 options.
One is to buy a router.
You can connect the other computer via ethernet cable.
However it may be cheaper for 50 feet to go wireless.
Look for routers on sale at big box stores with rebates.
They are sold cheaply as a draw to get people who have more than one computer to shop in the store.
    All brands are ok.
The wireless router in most cases can be used either with cable connections or wireless.
You will have to buy a wireless network adapter - either pci or usb if the other computer is a desktop.
At 50 feet the cable would be in the same price range as an wireless adapter.
Your second option is to use crossover network cable which is generally more expensive than the regular stuff.
With a crossover cable you could connect the 2 computers together via the network cards but you would have to install a second network card into your computer and set it up ( more complex).
As for sharing files you would set up a network with the router and the 2 or more computers. You can share files and limit access to read only and not have the ability to damage files on your computer.
Get a router to share your broadband connection.
    That is the easiest route.

Thank you for those suggestions. I am now pricing the options. The 15m Network and Crossover cables are the same price here in Australia.

Easiest to go wireless as long as you do not have reception problems due to neighbours.
Cable ends can get damaged as people trip over the cables.
You can get a wireless router and have your choice of cable or wireless.
