Configuration warning - Help needed.

After some kids played with the computer, when it was started again it said windows was not shut down correctly. After going thru the process to get it started, I was unable to launch the internet. I got the following message:

Configuration Warning
An error occurred reading the startup configuration file. Please contact your Administrator.
pref.js,line68:SyntaxError:unterminated string literal. user_pref[ "mail.serverl.director ", "C\\Windows\\Mozilla\\Profiles\\d

How do I fix this problem? I need simple instructions, I'm not very knowledgeable about this stuff.

Open the prefs.js file, located in the salted folder of Mozilla or Netscape. The salted folder is located here, if using Windows 2000/XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt

If using Windows 98/ME, the folder is located here:
C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt

To open a "js" file, first open Notepad
Click on: File | Open
Then navigate to the above locations, depending on your OS.

Next:
Look at the lines similar to the below, and see if any of them are incomplete.

user_pref( "mail.server.server1.daysToKeepBodies ", 30);
user_pref( "mail.server.server1.daysToKeepHdrs ", 30);
user_pref( "mail.server.server1.delete_mail_left_on_server ", true);
user_pref( "mail.server.server1.directory ", "C:\\WINDOWS\\APPLICATION DATA\\Netscpe\\Profiles\\profilename\\*.slt\\Mail\\pop.yourisp.net ");
user_pref( "mail.server.server1.directory-rel ", "[ProfD]Mail/pop.yourisp.net ");
user_pref( "mail.server.server1.download_on_biff ", true);

If a line is incomplete you can finish the line using the above examples, OR:
If you have made a backup of your Profiles folder, then copy that prefs.js file and replace the existing prefs.js.

If you can do neither, then rename the prefs.js file to Xprefs.js, and then you will need to re enter all your preferences...

If you aren't sure whether or not the line is incomplete, post the lines which start with:
user_pref[ "mail.serverl.director ", "C\\Windows\\Mozilla\\Profiles\\d

The example you show, is confusing as it doesn't match any of the default locations for the prefs.js file.

 

I think that the "d" in the warning must be part of "default ", but there should be a number, not a letter after server.
And, what program is used to launch the internet? But, I must agree with Ramona.
