Hi, I am new to this board.

I have done a search on the topic but not found anything satisfactory.

Could you please let me know how to retrieve the equivalent of %computername% in a batch file

Here is a bit of background. I have got a network of 30 odd computers. Some workstations are running win95 some win98 and some XP Pro.
File server is Novell. From the Novell I wish to launch a script which will tell me the name of the computer on the network, its OS and the hd capacity, cpu type, frequency, RAM ans SW.

Win9x does not support %computername% or %OS% so, what to do?

    Welcome to the forum peterh.

I think I have a batch file at home that will do what you want. Will check for it in the morning and post back the contents.

If a person knew the IP address of the computer they wanted the name for coulden't they just

    ping -a xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.

I do believe the -a shows the target computer's hostname.
