Probably because of wear and tear on the old PSU and because it was not a good quality component. Therefore it failed quicker than a good quality PSU.

I always shut off my computer when I am not using it. It saves power and it extends the life of your hardware components if you shut the computer off.

Its possible yes. Especially since it was a crappy OEM PSU.
