Hi guys, well, the situation is that, i brought my computer from america to australia, when i opened up the box, i found my computer dented, power supply dented, and my cpu and via chipset fans have fallen off.... i've put them back on, though the via chipset fan doesnt look like it will last there, it still holds together though.... anyway, i went to boot up the computer, fans all working, the hard drive light went on, but the internal speaker was beeping, and there was no display on the screen.... the internal speaker was constantly beeping, like 'beep....beep.....beep.....beep' .... could this be because one of the components on the motherboard is broken? i've checked all the connections, hard drive is connected, all cards connected.... My system is as follows:
    AMD 1GHZ
    256MB RAM
    Ricoh mp9120a cd-rom
another cd writer, the name eludes me now, but its scsi
    30gig hdd
    120gig hdd
    Geforce 2 MX
    SMC network card
    scsi card
    250w power supply
motherboard brand, i'm not sure on.

I'm trying to find a place to repair it, if anyone in australia, sydney knows where i could find a place to repair, plz tell me. I hope i can find out whats wrong with this, it is just bugging me. Thanks guys.

Remove all cards and disconnect all connectors. Reinsert all cards and reconnect all connectors. If you have an Award bios, usually one repeating beep means bad memory. Make sure you pull out your ram stick and put it back in making sure you've got it ALL THE WAY IN! Good luck.

Those beeps are error codes telling you what the problem is, or at least giving you a place to look for a problem.

Find out what kind of BIOS your system has (AMI, Award, IBM, Phoenix, etc), then try to boot your system and count the beeps. Note there may be long and\or short beeps. Then go to one of these websites, Definitions and Solutions for BIOS Error Beeps and Messages/Codes, or Power On Self Test Beep Codes, and look up your particular BIOS, and check to see what the code means. Once you know that, you may be able to fix it. The codes listed on these websites are by no means the only codes though, and you may need to contact your Mainboard\BIOS manufacturer for an explaination of the code.

Another thing I would check, is the power voltage there the same as in the USA? I've never been to Austrailia so I don't know what they have, but a long time ago I was working for a computer company that put together several computers in California for a networking demonstration at a computer show in England, and when they turned them on they smoked, because nobody changed the voltage setting on the power supplies. And when I say "smoked ", I ain't kidding. The entire network was dead in minutes. We lost a bunch of money, any business we would have drawn from the show, and a considerable amount of face... Not to mention getting our butts chewed royally by the company president.

ok, found out the original problem, memory stick wasnt seated all the way in, thats fixed, but now i have an even worse problem, the computer starts up, as in fans working, but i'm not sure about anything else. I get no video, but the hdd light lights up for about 30 seconds, then the light turns off.... its not even going into the boot up sequence..... could this be my cpu now? I've reconnected all the connections, and its not the power supply cuz the power supply was originally from australia anyway. thanks for the quick answer guys, hopin to find more answers for this problem

    G'day, mate! Welcome to WindowsBBS.

What Ax Slinger is referring to is a slide switch on the power supply that switches the line voltage from 120v to 240v. If it's set to 240, things might just about work, but...

Australia's electrical power in home receptacles is 240 volts at 50 HZ, using this power plug and receptacle configuration. In all probability, the supply is set to 240.

US home receptacles are at 110-120 volts at 60 HZ. Ergo, the supply has to be switched to 120V. It SHOULD work passably well on our 60HZ power.

If there is no voltage selector switch, you'll be investing in a 120-volt power supply.

    g'day and thanks,
yup, i know all about that, i'm actually aussie, moved to america, brought my computer over, used a converter to step down from 240 to 120, never changed the power supply because there was never a switch, they gave me a 'bodgy' one, hehehehe..... but i moved back here, so still using the 240v..... anyway, yeah i know it isnt the power supply, .... but what i'm thinking now, it could be my cpu maybe? because when the fan came off, i didnt put any silicon grease between the heatsink/fan and the cpu.... could this be it? OR, since the fan came off, it could have been knocking a few of the motherboard parts around, causing something to either get destroyed, or cracked... i have no idea to tell how the motherboard is broken or not.... all i know is that i'm getting this symptom where i turn the computer on, and i dont get anything on the screen.... i'm not sure if the monitor is even receiving a signal, .....
