i have a dell xps 720 and my desktop wont power on. When I try to turn it on i hear a strange sound which I believe is popping and the power button blinks amber. One of the causes in the manual say it was interferrence and to remove any power cords from the same outlet that the computer is using. I do that and it seems to power on and then it shuts down. I try it again it seems to start up but I smell something funny coming from the desktop so I turn it off. What could it be?

Sounds like a PSU failure. That will often cause the bad smell. I suggest you stop trying to run the computer & have the PSU tested ASAP.

If you can't seem to resist flipping the power button on/off, I highly recommend putting your local Fire Department's phone number on speed dial.

I read on other forums that to disconnect everything so that the only thing connected is the cpu, mb, and the psu to know that everything else is working. When I did that and tried to turn it i heard beeping sounds. I believe they were four beeping sounds. Does any one know what these beeping sounds signify?

Thanks. Figured out it was the PSU.
