Those modules don´t operate at the same frequency. The original at 1600 MHz and the one you want to add at 1333 MHz. The original would be downgraded to 1333 MHz. My recommendation is to get a matched pair with the same specs as the original. If the operating system is 32bit, get 4 GB (2x2 GB). If 64-bit, get 8 GB (2x4 GB).

Neil, as you know, that was the short version. The longer version includes latencies and other parameters which make you understand why they sell matched pairs. In addition to that, not even Dell can tell exactly which modules are in those boxes ... ... !

The machine should have a sticker from Dell on it that says Service Tag... With the tag number you can go to Dell's web site and get all the needed info regarding ram etc..

Standard RAM won't fit into Dell machines. Make sure whatever RAM you choose is compatible with Dell.

I've encountered incompatibility with older Dell machines. I haven't tried it with newer ones.

I am talking about machines that had 98 and XP on them. Was in a computer club and we used anything that was good out of one machine to another machine. Especially Ram and HD. Some cards we did have PS we did have problems with from Dell's.

I have worked on a lot of Dell Desktops and laptops. Never had any problems installing any ram on older or newer models.
