Hi guys I have been searching for a solution to a problem on and off for about the last 6 months and it has now driven me to distraction.

I have a digital camera that uses compact flash memory cards. For quite some time I was transferring my images to PC using a PNY Compact Flash card reader.

About 6 months ago my PC died and I took the decision to get a newer one. The one I have now is a decent spec (Athlon 2.4Ghz etc...) but it has Windows 98se on it. This is because I have some software/hardware that wont work on XP and I cant afford to replace it all. That and I don't really want all the whistles and bells that XP has, because I only use my PC for design (I'm a graphic designer) and email. No games or anything like that.

Anyway the problem I have is that I cannot locate drivers for my compact flash card reader and the company who made (PNY) it seem to have erased it from history.
The reader is a transparent blue PNY Technologies using USB 1.1 (I think). It has a single slot and doesn't need any additional drivers on Windows XP.

Can I copy the drivers that XP uses and use them to install on Windows 98se or am I dreaming?!

Alternatively, are there any generic reader drivers I can get that will work?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Tried Already

Thanks but I have tried all of these drivers already with no success.

My particular isn't listed on the PNY website. It's transparent blue on the top (you can see the circuitry inside), and cream on the underside.

There seems to be nothing even closely related on thier site. So I am at a loss for ideas.

    Is there a Plan B??

I'm surprised that the 98 drivers listed don't work - your card reader must have a different chip.

Is there a Part no. on the card?

I know this dodges the question, but how about replacing the reader - cheap enough.

Try these drivers - Lexar and Samsung - may work :)

In order to attach to this post the drivers .exe file has been given the .txt extension.

Save to your hard drive - alter the extension to .exe and give it a try. After unzipping right click on the .inf file > install.

The part number is 9352501077 but it doesn't seem to relate to anything and doesn't even get any results for it in Google.

The question about getting a new one is a good one. I will do exactly this as soon as I can find someone who will sell me one without trying to charge 3 times the going rate. I cannot afford to wait 3 days for an online purchase to be delivered. And I really object to throwing it away event though I know it works perfectly well. If nothing else it's wasteful and I am trying not to do it on principle.
    Honest I'm not a miser!!!!

    Thanks,

I will try as soon as I get in. This was a last ditch effort before reluctantly upgrading to XP. I know it would be cheaper and easier to buy a new one but I fear that this is going to happen more often with other hardware and software as even now there are things that ONLY support XP. So it's inevitable that I will have to bite the bullet at some point.

    OR Learn Linux!!

I'll let you know if they work.

Well I'm at home now and I'm afraid the file you attached doesn't work.

Say's it does not contain information about your hardware.

I REALLY need to get this sorted tonight.

Can you not transfer the images direct from the camera by plugging in the supplied cable and using the supplied software. I often do it that way although it is slower than using a card reader - and it uses up the camera battery.

    If Only

    I wish I could...
I don't have them. They are somewhere in France which is where they were stolen from about a year ago.

I never really worried about replacements because (you guessed) I have a reader.

I don't know if this helps, but I remember that previously when installing it I got messages saying something like 'Found new hardware E-USB bridge' and 'Shuttle adapter' and 'host Controller' or something similar.

Do you not have a pal with a card reader and the Win 98 drivers?

There are no generic drivers as such as there are a number of different chip manufacturers for the chips used in readers.

I don't know what it's like in Staffs, but Nottingham is 80's ville. Most people are either too busy perfecting their Bon Jovi haircuts or saving up for Spandau Ballet shoulder pads to thinks about computer peripherals.

The point is that I am the only one of all my friends that actually owns a computer less than 6 years old and therefore am the only one who's even heard of Compact Flash readers, let alone HAS one!

Can I not read the numbers on the chips and find out that way? (the casing is transparent after all)??

I do sympathise, but as a photographer (amateur) and a member of the local Photographic Society I could lay my hands on half a dozen or more card readers.

If you can see a makers name on any of the chips there is an outside chance that I can find drivers for you, but don't hold your breath!

I found the attached on DriverGuide.com - supposedly a generic pny driver for 98. It doesn't get a good write up, but worth a try.

    it just got worse

Thanks for the advice. You wont believe this but the situation has just got infinitely worse.

I did a bit of looking around and found a few people with similar problems. The solution for them was to install mass storage device drivers.

I tried this and I really wish I hadn't. While I was trying other solutions I asked my girlfiend to have a dig around for the original driver disk (Just in case). And what do you know, She found it buried in a bag of my daughters toys.

    Great, I thought.

however my joy was short lived. My PC is now not recognising my CD Rom drive so I can't get it to read the disk! I know it has something to do with the mass storage thing but I can't get it back to how it was.

    ARRRRGGGGHHH!

I always wondered what led people to smash up their computers in rage....

    ...Now I know.

Go into Device Manager and right click on each of the IDE controllers with the exclamation mark > Properties - what message is displayed?

The easiest way to resolve this is to remove the controllers by clicking on Properties > Remove and rebooting to let Windows find them again.

FYI - I am leaving this morning for the South to continue with the care of my parents - I will only be logging on infrequently in the evenings.

I have tried that with no success. After rebooting windows detects them and automatically reinstalls them.

Thanks for all your advice. I am just about to install XP as a dual boot for the meantime.

    Thanks again
