OK the reason the MSDOS.SYS would not copy was because yo already had one and it was protected.

Confirms you had to do the install anyway.

No you need to do another install (overlay) as below

    1. put windows CD in drive
    2. boot from the boot floppy; choose CD Rom support
    3. go to CD drive type "setup "
    4. click OK to all defaults "EXCEPT" install to c:\windows.000

edit this line to say only

    c:\windows (remove the .000)

This will keep all your settings and installed software.

Normally anyway, if you deleted some of these files some of your programs will not work. But windows should be completely repaired.

Okay..........up and running again after another overlay. THANK YOU ALL! Still no sound from media player.......still says I have no sound card. This time when I got to device manager there was an unkown 'other' device in the list with no driver installed. When updating driver via windows update it promted me to register again. I did and it gave me a list of installed devices. The sound card was unknown and update was unable to locate a driver for it.(AHH-HAA) Now all I have to do is locate the sound card in this thing and identify it. If anyone reading this post can tell me where and what to look for I would be grateful.

    Dell Inspiron 7000 laptop

Once again, Thank you all for your help!

    Markp,

Thanks for all your help. I checked the links and also the drivers for wave device on my PC. They showed to be installed. When I first started reinstalling drivers, after getting system back up, I removed all sound devices listed in device manager. When I installed drivers, wave device was one of the things that got reinstalled. I have since downloaded and installed Winamp and all my audio files play fine. I removed Media Player completely (even emptied the folder) and redownloaded and installed it. I have been through all the settings for it and in 'multimedia' as told by the microsoft support page where the error code took me. Media Player still has no sound when playing from files and tells me there is no sound card when trying to play a cd. ???????? Don't know whats wrong, but will keep trying to figure it out and post back when/if I do.

Again, many thanks! the important thing is that its up and running again! :D :D
