    Hi,

I know that both the BIOS and Windows XP OS both have roles to play in the installation of a standard serial port on the motherboard.

What I would like to know in better detail is what the actual procedure is.

I would like stop windows from loading its own serial drivers (serenum.sys and serial.sys) for a particular serial port and use my own driver. If the device is removed in Device Manager is will reappear on the next reboot.

In the BIOS, you would set the address it would be using at the IRQ it is assigned. The default usually works fine these days. I wouldn't recommend doing any changing unless you have a definite IRQ/address conflict.
To install your driver, open Device Manager, expand the Ports (COM & LPT), then double click your Communications Port.
Click on the Drivers tab, then click on the Update Driver button. When the Update Driver Wizard starts up, Select 'No, not this time to look on the internet for a driver' then NEXT. Then select 'Install from a specific location', then NEXT. Then select 'Don't search. I will select a driver to install, then NEXT. Then click on 'Have disk' then 'Browse' to where your drivers are located and select yours. Installation should commence.
