When backing up your profile, you're supposed to "close the browser and quick launch ". As I understand it, the quick launch part of the taskbar is where the icons are just to the right of the Start button, is that right? How would I go about "closing" my FF quick launch? I've just plain deleted the icon from quick launch when backing up my profile in the past (figured that was the ultimate way of closing FF quick launch!), and then restoring it afterwards, but that seems kind of silly...
I tried a google search on "closing quick launch ", and found some talk about programs like MSN messenger, which remain active in the background even after you "x" out of them - but I'm not aware of FF doing that on my computer.
    Can someone please elucidate?
    Thanks!

That's correct. To close it, right click anywhere on the open field area of the Taskbar and point to Toolbars > Quick Launch > and click it to clear the check mark. The Quick Launch area will then disappear but all the icons will be there when you reenable it.

As above this is right But if you want to close JUST mozilla quick launch go to edit, preferences, advanced and uncheck the box, keep mozilla in memory. That will just take mozilla off the quick launch bar. I dont know if FF is the same but it should be ! at least it should be about in the same spot

The instruction having to do with backing up your profile is speaking of the Mozilla quick launch which you don't have in Firefox. If you are trying to close quick launch in Mozilla, just right click on the icon and select exit.

The Windows Taskbar "Quick Launch" is by the Start button as you stated and has nothing to do with the Mozilla Icon pasted in the "Notification Area" next to the clock. If you have FF, there is no icon in this area.

The Icon in the Quick launch area next to the date does not have to be removed as it is not active until you click on it. That area is for keeping shortcuts so that you can get to them without moving windows out of the way when you need them.

FF is funny in having moved around several functions, and, to complicate matter it calls it something different. Since nothing which makes sense is found, and, I never messed with any kind of Quick Launch, because it may create problems (that's why there is the warning). so, surferdude2 may be quite correct, but have no way to check it. So, if you have a FF icon in the Startup, by the clock, you will remove it permanently from Start|Run|msconfig|Uncheck anything related to FF.

So it sounds like as long as there's no FF icon by my clock (the only FF icon I have is just to the right of my Start button), I don't have to worry about closing it before I back up my profile.
Thanks, everyone! And Surferdude, thanks for the tip on right-clicking on the Taskbar. Hadn't ever tried that before!

Any time you want to be *truly* sure that a program is no longer running, open Task Manager (Ctrl + Alt + Delete). Select the Processes tab if it's not already open (the views "stick" from one time to the next). Click on "Image Name" to sort the list alphabetically.

If the program you're interested in, e.g. firefox.exe or thunderbird.exe, isn't listed, it's not running. If it is, and you want to close it, right-click on it, select End Process, and click on Yes in the Warning box. Close Task Manager.
