I have a Gyration ULTRA mouse. From time to time the mouse pointer gets very choppy. I have windows 200 512mb ram and P4. This gets so bad at times I have to restart. I have plenty of resources. I did several virus and spyware scans and everything's clean. Sometimes it woks fine others it's virtually unusable. What can I do to fix this? Is my CPU overheating? It's awful.

    Thank you,

    Stephen Horrillo

Check in the device manager for any question or exclamation mark next to the mouse.
Make sure there isn't more than one mouse listed.

Check the manufacturers site for any drivers for W2K. The default W2K drivers will work, but if available, best to update them.

Uninstall the mouse from the device manager. If it's USB then try a different USB socket. Check that the connection isn't intermittent. Unplug and plug back in. Reboot and let windows reinstall it. Load new drivers if available.

Check the event viewer in Admin tools/Computer management for any clues of other problems maybe causing it.

An outside chance is that if you haven't installed SP4 then do it as some fixes, and compatibility updates may pertain to this piece of hardware.

    That's my lot! :D

Make a log of when it happens and what you were doing right "before" it becomes choppy. Does it happen after listening to music or watching a viedo?

I'll try all that stuff later but believe it or not I changed the pointer from "Windows Extra Large Inverted" to Windows Extra Large Standard" and it seems to be ok... so far. Could the animation/inverted scheme be what was causing the problem?

Possibly. I wouldn't have thought an animated pointer would impact on system resources that much. But...

Apart from what has already been suggested, I'll add ONE (no TWO) more things! :D

Update your graphics card drivers, and I don't think this would have ANY bearing. But here's another BUT. What about updating (or installing) DirectX? The current version is 9.0c.

If it's an optical mouse, try it on some different surfaces. Sometimes slightly shiny surfaces will cause the mouse pointer to be "sluggish" or "jump around ". If its a ball-mouse, make sure the ball and rollers are clean.
