Is it necessary to run chkdsk regularly? Where do you go to find it to open it or schedule it? Thanks.

You will probably find differing opinions on this but I only run it when the PC is doing something unusual.

If you have certain types of blue screen crashes it will automatically want to run but I've also found that when I start having some of the odd one-off problems, chkdsk /f often clears them up for me.

What's the difference between chkdsk /f and using the Tool that gives you the option of fixing system errors and scan and attempt to recover bad sectors?

    Alicia

    My understanding of this ....

chkdsk /f - Fixes errors on the disk > this is equivalent to 'Automatically fix file system errors'.

chkdsk /r - Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information > this is equivalent to ' Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors'

So running the Error Checking tool (My Computer> Right click on the Drive > Properties > Tools-> Error Checking) with both options checked is the same as running chkdsk /f /r from the command line.

Alicia - Pete is 100% correct.

I specify chkdsk and a switch when posting on here because of past issues where I could never be really sure which option folks had picked when they ran the GUI tool. Several occasions I can remember where a user would run the GUI to scan & report and think they had fixed problems.

With the command line version, there was never a question.
