Hi, Recently I installed for a Friend a KVM 2 Port Switch, No1 PC XP Home SP2 second PC old IBM Vista 98SE. Both Machines run on 1024 X 768 Resolution but the 98 Machine every now and again will automatically change to a much lower 480X600 Resolution and needs changing back again which it will do. It did not do this apparently before I installed the DLink KVM Switch.
Anyone any idea why this is happening and how to fix it.
    Thanks

    Hi Hawk,

When Windows boots up it detects the monitor. Win 98 needs special drivers for some monitors.

I suppose if the Win 98 system is booted when the switch is on the XP system it cannot detect the monitor and uses "Default Monitor ", that's probably why the resolution resets. Look in Device Manager and check what monitors are listed.

So...before he starts the Win 98 system, he should change the switch to that system so that the correct drivers will be loaded.

Monitor drivers are loaded at boot and cannot be changed until the next boot. If Windows cannot find a monitor connected (because the KVM is on the Win XP system) it will load Default Monitor drivers.

That would be my guess :)

    Hi Matt,
Thanks for that, yes that does make sens. I will tell her to try it out and see, but I am pretty shure that this is it.
I use a KVM (Belkin) with 3 PC's and I don't have this problem. (all XP)
Mind you I do have problems but mine is with the Mouse sometimes the Mouse will freeze up when I boot the second PC and the Mouse will then be frozen on all of the Machines but usually a re-boot will fix it, as it is intermittend it is very hard to work out what it could be.
    many thanks
