OK I know some of you will shake theyr heads at this question, but I still want to know.
I happen to like the standard desktop that comes with 8.1 (Metro) ??
Lots of people don't like it (read this Forum) and change to using "Start 8 "
Now I would'nt mind trying it out just to see what the fuss is all about, but before I would consider doing that, I have to be 100% sure that I can change back to my Tiles without any problems.

Hi hawk22. I've never used Start8 but instead have used StartIsBack since I prefer it but you would follow a procedure just like installing any other program.

    1. Backup your data if necessary
    2. Create a System Restore Point
    3. If you find you don't care for Start8 then you can always uninstall it and if needed you can use Revo Uninstaller to remove all traces of the program.

When I have used StartIsBack I found it was a seamless experience, the program uninstalled itself cleanly after I was done using it, and the Metro interface worked fine with no issues.

Thanks Evan, have you by any chance tried out "Start Menu Reviver "
I had a look at Start is back, and according to your experience easy to remove again.
What was your reason to remove it, just curious.

Hi Bill, There is no problem in using Classic Shell or Start8 and trying them and then uninstall - all works OK without any hassle. Been there done that just to see if there was a problem. 2 Desktops and 1 Notebook using Start8.
If you have Start8 working - just put your cursor to the upper Right, off screen and the Tiles will available if you click on the Start Icon.
Then you just click on your Desktop Tile to come back to Start8. Have a play and learn your way round. :D Neil.

No, I've only used Classic Shell and StatIsBack both of which I think are great additions to Windows 8.1. Classic Shell also works great on Windows 7.

I only removed it to test how good it uninstalled itself just in case a client wanted to remove the program for whatever reason. I've installed StartIsBack on dozens of Windows 8.1 computers and haven't experienced any problems with the program.

Start8 is simple to remove "cleanly" - so you don't need a strong-arm removal program like Revo. In testing both Classic Shell and StartIsBack, both uninstalled without problems too.

That said, because the .1 update to W8 added the option to boot directly to the desktop, you may find you don't need a Start menu alternatives.
