I am attempting a repair before an upgrade to XP on a Windows 98SE. AMD Duron 1200, 256MB, 20G with a 32X ATAPI CDROM and Cendyne 481648 burner.

Both / either / or a new CD will see itself as a music drive and identify music tracks only. Plays a good tune but they can't read data or directory information. Network cd drives work fine. All works fine in DOS so it is a Windows issue.

All music players have been removed and cleaned off the hard drive. No virus or spyware issues. Patches and updates applied.

Anyone have any clues or is a reinstall/upgrade the only way out.

Which CD drive are we talking about here?
Did your problem just start all of sudden?
You say "repair ", then I assume things were working OK before. What has happened?

Nothing noted that is new or different. The use of a 16 year old on Kazaa and who knows what is probably a major factor. I didn't do it - that's my story and I'm stickin to it.

All CDs show working. Drivers updated. No conflicts. Removal and reinstall has no effect. It appears to be a registry setting that focuses any cd as a music player only. Tests virus free on a few programs and is spyware has been removed.

I think a clean install of the OS may be the only reasonable solution.

Try disabling the autorun feature. Also, if you have tweakui, make sure it's not enabled there too.

I still have no answer to my question. You have CD ROM, and CDRW drive. Does same thing happen in BOTH drives?

Just wanted to let y'all know that I posted this same problem about an hour ago in hardware. Was directed to this thread.

The same thing happened to my neighbor. All of his data CD's appear to be music CD's. When you look at the content of the CD via explorer there is only one name, it reads "track01.cda." I'm stumped too but will follow this thread for what is hopfully enlightenment:D

BTW, my neighbor was also running Windows 98SE.

My home computer sometimes does the same thing on the CD drive but not the CDRW. Also if I open and close the CD tray once or twice it can be read normally. Always thought it's just the drive giving out, just haven't gotten around to replacing it yet.

I'll keep any eye on this thread myself, maybe save a few bucks and not have to replace the CD-Rom drive.

Wanted to ask if anyone has come across a fix for this like reinstalling their OS or a regclean program or anything like that.

I had a similar problem with an older CD-RW. It was made by Hi-Val but showed all CD's as audio CD's. The problem was with the drive itself.

The solution there was to update the drive's BIOS with a flash from Safe&Friendly that allowed me to use a BIOS from Creative. The drive then showed the CD's correctly.

I don't think Safe&Friendly is around any more, and using an incorrect BIOS is not recommended, either. But the moral is that you could look for a flash update for the drive.

My neighbor had this problem appear last week. Today we purchased a new drive and after installing it the problem is gone. BTW, our first plan was to get updated drivers but there were none to be had.

He bought the drive at Best Buy... it is a CDRW and after rebates the cost is $15.00. I guess DVD's are tak'n over.
