Hi I have a friends pc that had problems with cdrom, so we have installed a replacement(new) but when a cdrom I.e program is put into the device it comes up with an error message failed to intialize and then the audio player pops up when checking explorer its shows any of these disc as audio cd's even though there are not.. so any programs or games can't be recognised
anyone any ideas I have done all the obvious things I can think of like checking cables settings etc.. thanks all rodger..........

Was the new drive brand new or just "new to you "?

    How about the jumper?

I had an old CD-ROM that saw all CD's as audio CD's after installing some burning software (I don't remember which one). Mine required a flash ROM upgrade to solve the problem. What make/model of CD-ROM? (If it is truly "new" in age, this is probably not the problem, but you could look to see if there is a new flash available).

Not really. Except to stick yet a third in there for testing. Not too convinced that a reinstallation will solve the problem. But if you have XP, a repair may do it and you won't lose anything (except updates).
