Hi and welcome to the BBS,

Sounds like the drive has only recently been installed. First thing I would try is to remove and reseat the cables on the drive (if you have not opened and worked inside a case before, post back and let us know). It may be that the drive is being "seen" but cannot be accessed.

Which version of Windows are you using?

A test you can do is to boot up with a Windows startup disk and try and read a cd (type "DIR" and press enter). This should tell you if it is a hardware problem or Windows.
If you can't read the cd, then it may be a faulty data cable or a problem with the motherboard.
If it is Windows, try removing the IDE controllers under Harddrive Controllers in Device Manager and reboot.

May help, but I don't think so, try removing the CD drive in Device Manager. Shutdown. Disconnect the cables. Do a full boot without it. Shutdown and reconnect the drive.

    hi matt
    thanks again for the help.
i tried the boot disk and it wouldnt read the music cd.
i put in a burnt cd and it read it.
i tried changing cables and that didnt help,
i tried slaving the cdrom with the hard drive,
that didnt work either.ialso tried replacing the sound card with an older one that i have and that was no help.

If we are talking about only music CD's or one particular disk, then it might be the new security system that they use now.

Can it run data disks OK in Windows, will it play music on a game disk?

i have several games that run fine, nascar 2002, nascar 203,
dirt sprint cars, unreal gold.the problem seems to be with
music cds only,i tried the cds in another computer and
they work fine.with this burner ive burnt data cds.
it smells like compaq strikes again.

    Can't think of much else.
    You didn't say you tried:
You may want to see if there are updates to motherboard drivers (don't know if you can with Compaq).

    Luck anyway,
    Matt
